Description
The 2nd Generation of ZWO EFW with 7 positions for 36mm unmounted filters
The ZWO EFW 7x36mm (V2) is a second-generation electronic filter wheel designed specifically for monochrome astronomy cameras. With space for up to seven unmounted 36mm filters, it offers smooth, reliable, and fully automated filter switching—essential for astrophotographers using LRGB or narrowband filters to capture deep-sky objects in stunning detail.
Milled from a solid block of aircraft-grade aluminum and finished with a sleek black anodized coating, the EFW is both durable and lightweight, weighing just 555 g (19.8 oz). Despite its strength, the wheel is only 20 mm (0.79") thick, making it compact enough for portable setups while maintaining excellent rigidity for long-term use.
Precision and Reliability
At the heart of the filter wheel is a high-quality stepper motor made in Japan by NPM, known for its precision, quiet operation, and long-lasting reliability. The wheel can rotate in both directions—clockwise or counterclockwise—giving you fast and efficient filter selection without delays.
Improved Connectivity and Flexibility
Compared to the original version, the V2 EFW 7x36mm features a larger body and new screw holes on both covers, allowing for stronger and more versatile connections. This design brings the filters closer to the camera sensor, reducing the risk of vignetting. It also enables direct connection to ZWO ASI cameras and compatibility with the M68 Off-Axis Guider (OAG), expanding your imaging options.

Simple Power and Control
The filter wheel is powered through a single USB2.0 connection—no bulky external power supplies or multiple cables required. It can be connected directly to your cooled CMOS’s USB hub or straight to your computer. With a low power consumption of just 120 mAh @ 5V, it integrates seamlessly into any astrophotography setup. Control is handled via ASCOM-compatible software or ZWO’s own drivers, ensuring wide compatibility with popular imaging applications.
Filter Compatibility
The carousel supports up to seven unmounted 36mm filters. For best results, ZWO’s own 36mm LRGB and SHO filters are recommended. If using third-party filters, ensure the glass thickness is between 1.5 mm and 3.0 mm (with frames of approximately 1.8 mm).
