Description

ZWO ASI585MC Air Smart Astrophotography Camera

zwo asi585mc air 3 in 1 astrophotography camera

The ZWO ASI585MC Air brings together several pieces of astrophotography equipment that would normally be purchased and installed separately. Instead of building an imaging setup around an astronomy camera, a guide camera, a mini computer and an external controller, everything is integrated into a single compact device that can be operated directly from a smartphone or tablet. Using the same Sony IMX585 sensor found in the ASI585MC Pro, this version adds a built-in astrocomputer, an integrated guiding sensor, onboard storage and wireless connectivity. The result is a simpler and tidier setup that reduces the amount of equipment attached to the telescope while preserving the flexibility of a traditional astrophotography system.

A practical solution for modern imaging setups

zwo asi585mc air

Many astrophotographers eventually reach a point where reducing the number of devices becomes just as important as improving image quality. The ASI585MC Air addresses this by removing several components that would normally be installed on the mount. There is no need to place a laptop beside the telescope or add a separate controller to manage the session. Guiding is also integrated into the camera itself, eliminating the need for an additional guide camera and guide scope. This makes the overall setup easier to assemble, easier to balance and significantly more portable. Whether the system is used in a backyard observatory or transported to a dark-sky location, fewer accessories mean faster deployment and fewer potential points of failure. At the same time, users remain free to choose their preferred telescope, mount and filters rather than being limited to a fixed optical system.

The features that make the difference

A sensor that performs well across multiple targets

The Sony IMX585 sensor combines 2.9 μm pixels, 8.29 MP resolution, and excellent sensitivity to produce detailed images of a wide range of celestial objects. Its small pixels are well suited to high-resolution lunar and planetary imaging, while its low noise characteristics also make it a capable performer for nebulae and galaxies. The camera is equally comfortable being used for Electronically Assisted Astronomy (EAA), especially when combined with its live stacking capabilities.

zwo asi585mc air camera main sensor features

Integrated guiding for a cleaner setup

The camera incorporates a dedicated SC2210 guiding sensor, allowing autoguiding without adding extra hardware to the imaging train. By removing the need for a separate guide scope, the overall system becomes lighter and mechanically simpler. This is particularly beneficial on compact portable setups where every additional accessory adds weight and complexity.

zwo asi585mc air camera guide sensor features

Low noise where it matters

With a read noise as low as 0.7 e⁻ and a 40,000 e⁻ full well capacity, shorter exposures remain a practical option for many targets. This can be particularly useful when imaging bright nebulae, where preserving detail in luminous regions while gradually revealing fainter structures is often preferable to relying solely on very long exposures. The camera also benefits from a hardware-level zero amp glow design, helping to produce exceptionally clean calibration frames regardless of exposure duration.

Efficient cooling for long imaging sessions

The integrated two-stage TEC cooling system can lower the sensor temperature by 30 to 35°C below ambient temperature. By reducing thermal noise, the camera maintains image quality during extended imaging sessions, even in relatively warm conditions.

Built-in storage and straightforward connectivity

zwo asi585mc air camera storage

The camera includes 256 GB of eMMC storage, allowing multiple targets to be captured without immediately requiring external storage devices. Additional storage up to 1 TB can also be connected when needed. Connectivity is equally straightforward, with:

  • 4 × USB 2.0 ports
  • 1 × USB Type-C port
  • 2 × DC12V 10A outputs
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz)

These connections allow focusers, filter wheels and mounts to be managed from a single device.
